Information on repair and maintenance of Toyota Highlander cars electronically

Toyota Highlander is a Toyota SUV. It was introduced at the New York International Auto Show in 2000 and has been sold in Japan, the United States and Australia since 2000/2001. In Australia it is offered under the name Toyota Kluger, as the Hyundai Terracan goes by the name Highlander there. The SUV is available in Europe from 2021. Toyota also introduced the independent Grand Highlander series for the North American market in February 2023.

The main market for this car is the USA. Toyota Highlander is positioned as a car for active driving enthusiasts aged 20 to 30 years old and belongs to the class of mid-size SUVs. In the Toyota lineup, it occupies an intermediate position between the Toyota RAV4 and 4Runner models.

The SUV was built on the Toyota Camry platform and also used elements of the Lexus RX/Toyota Harrier platforms. The car was offered in 5-seat (2001–2007) and 7-seat (2004–2007) versions. The basic configuration of the Toyota Highlander was equipped with front-wheel drive, but a version with all-wheel drive (50:50) was available for an additional fee.

The presentation of the second generation Toyota Highlander took place at the Chicago Auto Show, and sales began in July 2008 (the hybrid version - from September 2008). It is worth noting that this model is not represented in the Japanese domestic market, but in Australia it is sold under the name Toyota Kluger.

All cars in this line are equipped only with an automatic transmission. The 2.7-liter version is front-wheel drive only, while the 3.5-liter version is available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions.

For 2010, Toyota made some changes to the Highlander and Highlander Hybrid. The exterior of the car has been updated while maintaining the general style of the previous model. The front of the car has received significant changes, including new headlights, grille and bumpers.

Non-hybrid engines remain the same, but a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine is now available with the SE trim, previously only offered on the base model. Also, more standard features have been added to all trim levels starting with the base model, such as front and rear air conditioning, central locking, power windows, cruise control and a multifunction control key.

In March 2013, Toyota introduced the third generation Highlander at the New York International Auto Show. Production began on December 5, 2013. A  a revised version was presented at the 2016 New York International Auto Show. Since then, the 3.5-liter V6 petrol engine has been equipped with an automatic transmission with eight speeds instead of six.

In April 2019, the fourth generation Toyota Highlander was presented at the New York Auto Show. The model receives significant design changes, including a new aggressive hexagon-shaped grille, similar to the design of the new Toyota RAV4. Also, for the first time in the history of the SUV, 20-inch wheels appeared.

The car is built on the TNGA GA-K platform (McPherson and multi-link suspension), has become larger and has been improved in various aspects. It can seat seven or eight people across three rows of seats. The choice of engines has been reduced to two options: a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 (299 hp, 357 Nm) and a hybrid installation with a 2.5-liter gasoline “four” and two electric motors (243 hp). Both versions are equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The drive can be front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and there are several all-wheel drive options, including a rear electric motor for the hybrid.

In 2021, a new Toyota Highlander XSE trim was introduced with a sport-tuned suspension. In 2023, the car received a new 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 265 hp. and 420 Nm of torque.
