The Volkswagen Atlas is a seven-seat SUV from Germany's Volkswagen AG that is assembled at the Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant in the United States and sold in the United States and Canada. This mid-size crossover from Volkswagen was officially introduced in 2016, and sales began in 2017. In April 2018, a coupe version called the Volkswagen Teramont X was introduced in China. Then, in 2019, a coupe version called the VW Atlas Cross Sport appeared in the United States.
The Volkswagen Atlas crossover, built on a modular MQB platform with transverse engines, offers various engine and transmission options. The front-wheel drive version is powered by a 2.0TFSI EA888 engine producing 238 PS, while the all-wheel drive version is available with a 3.6L VR6 engine producing 280 PS. All engines are paired with an 8-speed Aisin automatic transmission. The Chinese market also offers a 2.5-liter turbo-petrol V6 with a power of 299 hp, mated to a 7-speed DSG. All-wheel drive options use a Haldex clutch, which connects the rear wheels when the front wheels slip.
On the safety front, the Volkswagen Atlas includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning and parking assist.
At the Chicago Auto Show in February 2020, Volkswagen introduced an updated version of the 2021 Atlas. In addition to minor visual changes such as updated wheels, taillights and a new steering wheel, the now four-cylinder petrol engine will also be available with all-wheel drive at an additional cost in the future.
At the same exhibition three years later, another restyling of the 2024 model year series was presented. From now on, the VR6 petrol engine will be replaced by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with a maximum output of 201 kW (273 hp). The car also features a customizable digital instrument panel, the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit, available in 8-inch and 10.2-inch versions.
