Chevrolet Niva (VAZ-2123) is a cross-country vehicle from the Russian automobile manufacturer VAZ. The car has been produced since 1998, but until 2002 it was called the VAZ-2121 Niva. The model had the Chevrolet Niva name during the period of joint production by General Motors - AVTOVAZ from 2002 to 2020.
The VAZ company began developing such vehicles for off-road driving back in the 80s and continued for about 10 years. The final version of the VAZ-2123 appeared only in 1993, and the development of model variations with body types “pickup” and “van” immediately began. The car was tested in a variety of weather and road conditions. The tests were carried out in Uzbekistan, and in 1998 in Moscow the concept of the VAZ-2123 model was presented to the world.

For a large-scale production, VAZ entered into an agreement with General Motors, according to which the rights to use the brand, as well as car licenses, became the property of joint production. In the period from 2002 to 2003, production lines were built in Togliatti. There, cars were assembled and painted.
VAZ-2123 was the main competitor of the Kia Sportage car, which at that time was produced in Kaliningrad.
In 2017, the assembly of cars also began in Kostanay (Kazakhstan).
The company planned the presentation and production of the 2nd generation Chevrolet Niva for 2016, and the volume was to be about 120,000 cars a year. At the same time, the design was estimated at about 200 million dollars. The concept of the model was presented in 2014, but a year later the development was suspended. However, they still managed to release pre-production cars.
In 2019, VAZ bought from General Motors its shares in a joint venture and thereby became the owner of all rights to the Niva and Niva brands.
For some time, the production of the VAZ-2123 car continued under the name Chevrolet Niva, but subsequently the brand received a new name and a new brand LADA.
