The Toyota Corolla is a mid-size passenger car produced by the Japanese car manufacturer Toyota since 1966 in various modifications. Since 1997, it has been considered the best-selling car of all time and the first car to surpass the 30 million mark.
In twelve generations and many variations, the Toyota Corolla is the world's best-selling car, with 50 million units sold as of July 2021.
From 1968 to 2002, Toyota produced a Toyota Corolla-like model called the Toyota Sprinter in Japan only.
All over the world, Toyota Corolla is very popular, especially in the USA and Canada, Japan, China, Australia and New Zealand (where Toyota Auris is called Toyota Corolla). In Canada and the United States, the Toyota Matrix version of the hatchback is now marketed as the Toyota Corolla Hatchback from 2002 to 2014.
The first generation Toyota Corolla E10 was launched in Japan in October 1966, its main competitor then was the Datsun 1000. The model was produced in bodies:
- 2-door sedan;
- coupe;
- station wagon;
- 4-door sedan.
The design of the car consisted of a rigid axle with leaf springs at the rear, an A-pillar axle, a rear-wheel drive and a short-stroke inline four-cylinder engine.
Initially, it was supposed to use a 1000 cc engine, but in August 1969 it was replaced by an 8-valve L4 carburetor with a displacement of 1077 cc and a power of 60 hp. and a volume of 1166 cm³.
In the fall of 1969, the displacement of the engine was increased to 1166 cm³, as a result of which the productivity increased to 65 hp.
Toyota Corolla E10 was available with a 4-speed manual or 2-speed automatic transmission.
From the beginning of production to the present, the Japanese company Toyota has produced twelve generations of Toyota Corolla:
- Toyota Corolla E10 from 1966 to 1970;
- Toyota Corolla E20 from 1970;
- Toyota Corolla E30, E40, E50, E60 from 1974;
- Toyota Corolla E70 from 1979;
- Toyota Corolla E80 since 1983;
- Toyota Corolla E90 from 1987;
- Toyota Corolla E100 from 1991;
- Toyota Corolla E110 since 1995 in Japan and since 1997 in Europe and USA;
- Toyota Corolla E120 and E130 from 2000 to 2008;
- Toyota Corolla E140 and E150 from 2006 in Japan and from 2008 in the USA;
- Toyota Corolla E160 since 2012 in Japan and Toyota Corolla E170, E180 since 2013 in the international market;
- Toyota Corolla E210 from 2018 in Japan and from 2019 worldwide.
From 2007 to 2019, the 3- and 5-door versions of the Toyota Corolla were withdrawn from the market in many countries in favor of the Toyota Auris.
The latest generation was launched with a hybrid mechanics and three different bodies for the European market: a 5-door version, a sedan and a sports station wagon. Depending on the geographical area of sale, there have been important differences in appearance in recent generations.
Despite the fact that Toyota Corolla is considered a very reliable car, sooner or later operation will lead to breakdowns and malfunctions of the car. Timely maintenance of the vehicle will extend the service life without repair.
