The Tesla Model S was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009, and sales began in the United States in June 2012. The first thousand sedans Tesla produced were limited edition Signature and Signature Performance models. These vehicles are equipped with 85 kWh batteries. The base Model S started at $62,400 and could go up to $87,400. The most expensive configuration provided a range of almost 425 kilometers and the ability to accelerate to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds.

In the first quarter of 2013, 4,750 Tesla Model S vehicles were sold in the United States. These sales allowed this model to outpace such prestigious models as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series in terms of sales. This success underscored Tesla's influence and popularity in the auto industry.

In 2016, the Tesla Model S underwent a design update, moving closer to the style of the Model 3. At that time, versions with batteries with a capacity of 75 kWh and 90 kWh were introduced, as well as the P85D model with a new Ludicrous mode, allowing it to accelerate to 96.5 km/h in 2.8 seconds. The Model S 75, with a 75 kWh battery and 328 horsepower, has a range of 300 miles and is rear-wheel drive.

The Tesla Model S 90 version offers a 362 horsepower motor and a 90 kWh battery, increasing the range to 557 kilometers. It is noted that the Tesla Model S 60 and S 75 are the only rear-wheel drive models in the line, while all other models are equipped with all-wheel drive and two engines.

In August 2016, Tesla introduced the new Tesla Model S P100D with a range of 632 km on a single charge and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.4 seconds. Later, the Ludicrous+ option was introduced, reducing acceleration time to 2.2 seconds, making this model one of the fastest cars in the world.

In 2020, the Tesla Model S has undergone an update and is available in Long Range Plus and Performance trim levels. The standard model has a range of 215 to 245 km. The Tesla Model S Long Range Plus accelerates to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, while the Model S Performance reaches that speed in 2.4 seconds. The base model S Long Range Plus can travel up to 240 km on a single charge.
