In September 2012, sales of the second generation Nissan Note (E12) began in Japan. The launch in North America under the name Nissan Versa Note as a successor to the Nissan Versa hatchback took place in mid-2013. From autumn 2013 until the end of 2016, the European version was produced in Sunderland.

The third generation of the series was introduced at the end of November 2020 and launched in Japan in December 2020. Unlike the previous model, the car is somewhat smaller.
