A full-size SUV from German car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz has been sold under the name Mercedes-Benz GL since 2006. Technically, it is closely related to the M-class. In 2015, the GL and M-class were renamed and have since followed the new nomenclature introduced with the GLA. The M-class became the GLE and the GL was renamed GLS to get closer to the S-class.
The GL class was created to combat the proliferation of some of the very large SUVs that were circulating in Europe and North America, such as the Audi Q7 and Cadillac Escalade. From 2006 to 2012, the first generation of the Stuttgart maxi SUV was produced, designated by the initials X164.
In 2012, the second generation debuted, designated X166, which, however, on the occasion of a facelift in the fall of 2015, changed its name to GLS, thus sanctioning the ending of the initials GL as a commercial name.
The seven-seater premium SUV impresses not only with comfort and spaciousness in the cabin, but also with excellent dynamic performance on and off the road, while offering its passengers a huge amount of interior space and comfort at the level of a luxury sedan.
The cabin is made of quality materials, which in principle are familiar to Mercedes-Benz, this allows the driver and passengers to plunge into an atmosphere of endless comfort. At the same time, the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class can accommodate seven passengers, each of whom will be accommodated in the cabin with first-class comfort - after all, even the third row is equipped with "full-size" single seats.
The maximum usable trunk volume of the Mercedes GL is 2300 liters with a length of 2128 mm. To make passengers feel comfortable no matter what happens outside the window, the Mercedes-Benz GL boasts one of two climate control systems.
The Mercedes-Benz GL boasts an impressive list of passive safety features from adaptive airbags to the Pre-Safe system (analyzes data received from ABS and ESP, and tightens the belts in critical situations, returns the back to an upright position), first offered for SUVs. Of course, the car received a permanent all-wheel drive system, branded Mercedes 4MATIC. Well, the Europeans are even more lucky - all versions for this market will have another Offroad-Pro system installed.
All engines fitted to the GL-Class are fitted as standard with the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission with DIRECT SELECT and manual shifting.
Excellent dynamics and low fuel consumption are the result of a relatively low gross weight, which is provided by a monocoque body and excellent aerodynamics for a car with such impressive dimensions (cw 0.37).
