The Lexus RX or Toyota Harrier is an E-segment SUV developed by the Japanese manufacturer Toyota and sold under the Toyota and Lexus brands since 1997. It is a five-seater vehicle with a transverse front engine, available in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
The Lexus RX was first shown as a prototype at the 1997 Chicago Auto Show. The production model, based on the Toyota Camry platform, went on sale in Japan in December of that year and in the United States in March 1998. Initially, the Lexus RX was sold with a 2.2-liter inline-four that produced 141 hp. and a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine with 222 hp. paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. In November 2000, the 2.2-liter engine was replaced by a 2.4-liter with 162 hp.
The second-generation Lexus RX was officially unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2003, and will launch in North America two months later, followed by Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The car of this generation will increase in size by about fifteen centimeters in length, two in width and one centimeter in height.
In 2005, a hybrid version of the Lexus RX 400h appeared, based on the Hybrid Synergy Drive system, with a gasoline engine and two electric motors. One connected to the front axle generates 123 kW and the other, connected to the rear axle, 50 kW. The total maximum power that the car can develop is 272 hp.
The car is started by electric motors that provide a speed of approximately 50 km / h. When the need for power increases, the gasoline engine provides most of the traction, and the electric motors supply it from time to time when needed.
The Lexus RX 400h, along with its twin Toyota Harrier, is the world's first hybrid SUV.
The second generation Lexus RX is available with three engines:
- Lexus RX 330: V6 3.3 230 hp (2003-2007);
- Lexus RX 350: V6 3.5 276 hp (2007 - 2009);
- Lexus RX 400h: V6 3.3 Hybrid 272 hp (2005 - 2009).
These engines are available with a five-speed automatic transmission, but only in conjunction with all-wheel drive. The Lexus RX 400h uses a continuously variable electronic variator, and its transmission is conventionally all-wheel drive e-Four (behind the e-Four attachment there is not a traditional all-wheel drive with a transfer case and a propeller shaft, but an electric appendage).
The third generation Lexus RX was first presented at the Los Angeles show in the fall of 2008 and went on sale in the spring of 2009. In Japan, this generation of the Lexus RX, introduced in December 2008, is marketed under the Lexus brand for the first time, featuring more luxurious finishes than versions sold under the Toyota label.
The fourth Lexus RX series was unveiled at the New York Auto Show in April 2015, when the Japanese company also said it had surpassed 2.1 million Lexus RX models produced. For the European market, the debut took place at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. This series introduces a lengthened 7-seater version unveiled at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show under the name Lexus RX L7.
In 2019, the Lexus RX underwent restyling: the front optics received a new light signature, the shield was redesigned, and the fog lights were placed just below. In the rear, the lighting has been revised.
