Iran Khodro Samand is a car model from the Iranian manufacturer Iran Khodro, created on the basis of the Peugeot 405. The model is known abroad under different names. In Persian Samand is the name of a breed of fast horses.
Development of the Iran Khodro Samand by Iranian and international engineers began in 1996, but production for testing purposes did not begin until 2000. Production of the Iran Khodro Samand began in 2001 and the first car was sold the same year. It inherited the look of the national car Paykan from Iran Khodro, which was sold by Iran Khodro from 1967 to 2005.

This car is sold in Venezuela under the name Venirauto Centauro, in Azerbaijan Azsamand Aziz, in Senegal SenIran Samand LX and SenIran Samand Mandori, in Syria Siamco Sham and in Belarus as Samand TU5.
Its technical characteristics are quite comparable to European cars and it has all the functions of a modern car, such as ABS and electric windows. This machine is popular in Iran, production can hardly meet the demand. In addition, there is now a version of the Samand with an extended wheelbase - Samand Sarir.
The car is based on the Peugeot 405 mechanical platform and uses the original version of the XU7JP/L3 engine, among other parts of the aforementioned car. The Peugeot 405 is also produced in Iran along with a highly modified version of the previous Peugeot Pars. The IKCO plant produces 80% of the parts for the domestic Iran Khodro Samand, including a locally developed Iranian engine.
In export markets (as well as the Iranian market), IKCO uses the TU5JP4 engine for both Peugeot models and its Samand branded products. This is because the TU5 is a powerful and economical engine. Additionally, due to the ease of sourcing parts throughout Europe, the TU5 engine has been used for several models such as the Peugeot 206, Peugeot 307 and Peugeot 207 series.
Equipment options for the Iran Khodro Samand include, in addition to the TU5 engine options, three new options: driver airbag, seat belts with pretensioner system and headlight height adjustment, as well as a retractable antenna system.
Since early 2009, IKCO has used locally developed Iranian engines to build the Iran Khodro Samand, and more recently it has included a locally developed dual-fuel engine for its new models (called EF7). In mid-2010, IKCO began installing only EF7 reference gasoline engines on the car.
The engine is not the base petrol version of the EF7 as its fuel is compressed natural gas and several parts of the engine must be removed to program the electronic engine control unit (ECU) to change the fuel. However, there is a petrol engine version which is currently in development.
On November 30, 2010, IKCO announced the major changes made to the new Samand Diesel over the dual fuel Samand models to indicate to its customers which vehicles can be upgraded.
The most significant changes are: changes in the grille composition and radiator dimensions, installation of an intercooler, a new hydraulic system and new hoses that can withstand higher pressure levels, new engine covers, a modified transmission that can withstand higher pressure levels and more torque provided by the engine , a new exhaust system and new materials in the insulation of the engine compartment.
