Information on repair and maintenance of Toyota FJ Cruiser cars electronically

The Toyota FJ Cruiser is a mid-size SUV unveiled as a concept car at the North American International Auto Show in January 2003.

The vehicle was developed for mass production following positive customer reviews and debuted in its final version at the North American International Auto Show in January 2005.

Aesthetically, the Toyota FJ Cruiser echoes the styling of the '70s Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40, especially at the front with round headlights integrated into a white grille. Another highlight is the compartment doors and the lack of a B-pillar.

The engine is a 4.0-liter 1GR-FE V6 longitudinal engine with rear or all-wheel drive. This is the same engine as the Toyota Tacoma and Toyota 4Runner and develops 239 hp.

There are 2 types of gearboxes used in Toyota FJ Cruiser vehicles:

  • five-speed automatic transmission like Toyota A750F with center differential VF2A for models with disengageable four-wheel drive;
  • manual 6-speed transmission of Toyota RA61F type with center differential VF4B for models with permanent four-wheel drive.

Models with manual transmission have permanent four-wheel drive. In models with an automatic transmission, a simpler plug-in four-wheel drive, which should only be engaged on slippery surfaces, so as not to damage it when stretched.

The front wheels are suspended from high double wishbones and are also linked by a stabilizer bar. The rear axle has four levers and coil springs, as well as a stabilizer bar.

Toyota FJ Cruiser has internally ventilated disc brakes - with 4 pistons in the front and 2 in the rear, which are controlled by a brake booster. It is equipped with ABS, Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Emergency Brake Assist (BAS), Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC).

The Toyota FJ Cruiser has rear doors that give it a unique style. The windshield is nearly vertical and has three wipers for the widest possible view. The separate frame design is based on the Hilux chassis. The engine compartment has been redesigned on 2007 and early 2008 due to cracks and deformations in the front inner fenders.

The 2007 model was available in five body colors:

  • Sun Fusion (yellow);
  • Black Cherry (dark red);
  • Titanium Metallic (silver);
  • Black Diamond (black);
  • Voodoo Blue.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named Toyota FJ Cruiser “Best Choice for Safety”. The vehicle was rated “good” in both frontal and side impacts (across all 14 categories).
