Mitsubishi Motors is one of the divisions of the Japanese Mitsubishi corporation, which has been controlled by the Nissan group since 2016, forming the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. This alliance is one of the largest automotive concerns in the world.
This unit was created at the end of the First World War. It originally produced aircraft engines that were used in World War II.
Mitsubishi was founded in 1873 by Iwasaki Yataro. It is a conglomerate of several companies. Mitsubishi stands for Three Diamonds and has a logo with three diamonds representing diamonds. The logo in its current form has been registered since 1914.
The first Mitsubishi car built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries appears in 1917. Thus Mitsubishi became the first Japanese car company to produce a production car, the Fiat Type A, under license in Japan.
This car was completely handcrafted and could not compete with cars of the same category produced by other automakers according to the modern production methods of the time. Thus, the first car model of the company disappeared in 1921 after it was produced in only 22 copies.
It wasn't until 1937 that Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) again developed a 4x4 sedan for military use called the PX33. After World War II, it was not until 1970 that Mitsubishi began to produce cars again under its own name under a new company called Mitsubishi Motors Corporation.
1970 saw the introduction of the Mitsubishi Forte, the progenitor of the pickup generation today produced under the name Mitsubishi L200. In 1973, the Mitsubishi Lancer was introduced with a displacement of 1.2 to 1.4 and 1.6 liters. The export of cars to Europe began in 1975.
Since 1977, new models have been released: Mitsubishi Debonair, then Mitsubishi Celeste, Mitsubishi Sigma and Mitsubishi Lambda. The last car produced & nbsp; with an overhead camshaft and an engine capacity of up to 2 liters. With the release of the Mitsubishi Sapporo, a 4-wheel independent coil-spring suspension was introduced, the first on production vehicles.
Since the mid-eighties, new models of Mitsubishi Starion Turbo and Mitsubishi Galant Turbo have been produced with the renewal of mechanics and body lines.
In 1981, the Mitsubishi Pajero SUV was released, which showed all its superiority and won the Paris-Dakar race in 1985.
In 1990, the first Traction Control System (TCS) was introduced. Then comes the development of a new 4WD SuperSelect transmission, multi-mode ABS and INVECS automatic transmission.
In 2007, the Mitsubishi Outlander 5-door, 5-seater plug-in 4WD SUV debuted in its second generation with a new platform and new styling, technology and comfort features. Mitsubishi begins producing versions of the Mitsubishi Outlander for the PSA Group, which markets it under the Peugeot 4007 and Citroën C-Crosser brands.
Mitsubishi manufactures over 20 models, many of which are only sold in Japan. The most famous in America and Europe are:
- compact Mitsubishi Lancer;
- Mitsubishi Eclipse sports car;
- Mitsubishi Galant sedan;
- minivan Mitsubishi Grandis;
- Mitsubishi Outlander SUV;
- SUV Mitsubishi Pajero / Mitsubishi Montero.
