The Toyota Tundra is a full-size pickup truck from the Japanese automobile company Toyota Motor Corporation. The pickup was first released in 1999, mainly for the US market. The model has a longitudinal arrangement of the engine at the front with the drive to the rear wheels or to all four wheels.
Available in 2-door (conventional cab) and 4-door (double cab / Crewmax) versions. The drive uses V6 and V8 gasoline engines with a volume of 3.4 to 5.7 liters. Power is sent to the rear axle (optional all-wheel drive) via a 5- or 6-speed manual or 4-, 5- or 6-speed automatic transmission.
In total, 3 generations of Toyota Tundra were presented:
- 1st generation - from 1999 to 2006;
- 2nd generation - from 2007 to 2021;
- 3rd generation - from 2021.
The first generation Toyota Tundra was introduced in May 1999 as a 2000 model called the Toyota T150. However, after a complaint filed by Ford about the similarity of the name with the Ford F-150 model, the Japanese manufacturer abandoned the Toyota T150 name in favor of Toyota Tundra after the court decision.
The second generation Toyota Tundra from 2007 is motorized with a choice between a 4.7-liter i-Force V8 up to about 276 hp. and a 5.7-liter i-Force V8 with 381 hp
Each engine has its own transmission:
- The 4.7 liter engine gets a 5-speed automatic transmission;
- The 5.7 liter engine gets a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The first official photo of the third generation Toyota Tundra was released on June 18, 2021. The pickup was officially unveiled at the Motor Bella show on September 21, 2021. Unlike previous generations, a 2-door body with a conventional cab is not available.
Such a top-end pickup will compete with the Ford F-150 Limited and the GMC Sierra Denali. These are cars of about the same price category. Externally, the pickup differs from other versions by a large amount of chrome in the exterior.
It also features an updated fully enclosed frame and coil or air spring rear suspension. Maximum towing capacity and maximum payload have been increased to 5,400 kg and 880 kg respectively.
